THE PLAN
A Two-Day Alishan Itinerary for the Sunrise
How to shape an overnight trip so you catch the dawn, walk the forest and ride the railway without rushing.

Travel up in the morning or early afternoon — from Chiayi by bus 7322 (about 2.5 hours) or, for the experience, by the reopened forest railway. Aim to arrive with time before 4:30 PM, because that's your one essential task on day one: buy the next morning's sunrise-train ticket at the Alishan Station 2F counter, which is also when the exact departure time is posted. With that secured, you can relax into the mountain.
Day one afternoon: the forest and a sunset
Spend the rest of the afternoon among the trees while the light is good: the Giant Tree boardwalk past the ancient cypresses, the misty Sister Ponds, and the Sacred Tree area, linked by the short branch railway if you'd rather ride than walk. As evening comes, find a viewpoint near the village for the sunset — the gentler, easier counterpart to tomorrow's dawn — then eat early and lay out your warmest clothes for the morning.
Day two: before dawn
The alarm will be brutal — somewhere around 4 AM — but this is what you came for. Board the Zhushan train in the dark and climb to the 2,451-metre platform, where you wait in the cold with the crowd for the sun. If the mountain is clear, you'll watch it break over Jade Mountain above a sea of cloud; if the fog wins, take comfort in the hush of the pre-dawn forest and the fact that the day is still young. Either way, you were there.
Day two: the morning after
Come down for a hot breakfast, then give the rest of the morning to whatever you missed the day before — more boardwalks, another stretch of railway, a quiet cup of the mountain's high-grown oolong. By early afternoon you'll be ready to descend, back to Chiayi and on to the rest of Taiwan. A two-day shape like this catches the sunrise, does justice to the forest and the railway, and never feels rushed — which, on a mountain that makes its own weather and its own timetable, is exactly the point.
Letting a tour carry it
If arranging the lodging, the ticket and the timing yourself sounds like a lot — or you're coming from Taichung or Taipei, where there's no easy public route — a two-day tour packages this whole itinerary, sunrise included, and is the simplest way to do it. You trade some flexibility and cost for having the hardest logistics handled, which for many travellers is a very fair deal on a trip with this many moving parts.
